Äskhults Hamlet is an untouched small "village" with roots in the 17th and 18th centuries, consisting of four cottages. There are findings telling us that people have lived here in several thousands of years! On May 2nd they arrange an annual lovely celebration called ”Maja”. In former times they said that they ”maja” when they decorated something with the new flowers and branches in full bloom. It was a tradition to fill the homes with beautiful greenery to celebrate the arrival of spring.
The timbered cottages shimmer in silver grey shades - all in truly beautiful scenery, among meadows, rollings hills and close to a lake. There are several trails, of different lengths, enabling you to enjoy the fantastic nature. Or take a stroll around the log cabins and the ancient agrarian landscape. The hamlet is carefully maintained in old fashioned traditional and organic ways, that also regards the growing of vegetables and caring for the animals on the farm.
In one of the small houses you will find ”Bengt’s Coffeecottage”, with interior dating back to when the village was flourishing. At the café they offer home baked Swedish ”fika” and a couple of traditional light dishes.
On our way back to Gothenburg we will make a stop at well known Bräutigams Marsipan & Confectionery, founded in 1870! Time to buy some treats for yourself or gifts maybe? They also offer delicious homemade icecream.
