Christmas fair at Tjolöholm's Castle
- a dear tradition in west Sweden
Tjolöholm Castle’s Christmas market is one of the largest in the west of Sweden and have been a tradition since 1987, with over a hundred exhibitors selling their arts, crafts and food delicacies on the estate.
The whole estate sparkles with festive lights and beautiful decorations. Father Christmas comes to the castle hall and every day there are many fun activities for both children and adults to enjoy. And for the hungry one, there is no shortage in places to eat.
The castle is also beautifully situated close to sea, with it's own small beach. If you're there in daylight we can recommend a walk on the estate.
Entrance fee to the Christmas fair and a guided tour of the upper floors of the castle is included in the tour. (Only 80 SEK per child!)

Tjolöholm Christmas Market
At the Christmas market, craftsmen and food producers are selling an array of handmade gifts and unique products. Here you will find ceramics, wood and textile crafts, Christmas wreaths, mustard, cheeses, kale, sausages, chocolates and much more.
Every day during the Christmas market, exciting things happen for both children and adults! Father Christmas receives children’s wish lists, you can make your own Christmas decorations, watch performances and join a guided tour of the upper floors in the castle. The children can also play in Emil’s Katthult, a play exhibition with environments from Astrid Lindgren’s beloved Emil books.
The castle gift shop is filled with items inspired by the history of the castle; including the castles own Christmas tea which is an appreciated gift. You might also be lucky and find vintage items from the early 1900s.
There are several choices for food and drink during the Christmas market. At Storstugan you can enjoy a homemade Christmas lunch, or a light lunch in Café Manegen where the popular pancake buffet is served or enjoy the chef’s delicious pastries in front of the fire in the castle dining room.
- history in short
‘It was like stepping into a fairytale, so completely different to anything I had ever seen before’ said the priest Gustaf Ankar on his first visit to Tjolöholm. The year was 1904, and the castle, church and worker’s village had just been completed. Blanche Dickson, widow of the wealthy businessman James Fredrik Dickson, lived in the magnificent castle.
The Tjolöholm estate dates back to the 13th century, when it was mentioned in the Danish King Valdemar’s land registry. Through the following centuries it was owned by many distinguished families. In 1892 Tjolöholm was bought by James Fredrik and Blanche Dickson. There they created what was once the largest stud farm in Sweden, where they bred and reared renowned thoroughbreds. There was also a driving school, where future coachmen and drivers were educated.
